Developmental Reading Assessment
(DRA)
www.pearsonschool.com
The DRA is administered three times a year.
Students are given a choice between two to four
books. The selections include nonfiction and
fiction text that include pictures and other
nonfiction text features. The test includes oral
reading, silent reading, oral or written retelling,
higher level comprehension questions, and word
analysis tasks. The test determines the students'
independent DRA levels. These DRA levels correlate
with grade levels. This is how we determine
students' needs for Title I services.

Spalding Writing Road To Reading
The Spalding Method is used to teach students
the 70 phonograms in our English language. It also
includes instruction on common spelling rules and
the five silent e rules. Students use this
knowledge when decoding and writing unfamiliar
words. For the most part, this program is used for
first through third grade students.

Headsprout is used primarily with Kindergarten
through second grade students. It is an interactive
computer program that covers the five reading
components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,
vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will be
able to print books of their own to take home.

Star Reader Program
The Star Reader Program creates an excellent
school and home literacy connection. When your
child is reading at home, it can be an activity
that you share together. For example, your child
could read the book aloud to you. Another option
could be, you and your child could take turns
reading pages. Or, you can read the book aloud to
the child. Read alouds are just as important for
students to hear as it is for them to practice
reading themselves. Read alouds allow students to
hear books that are too difficult for them to read
independently.
