KAW AREA TECHNICAL SCHOOL

One of the best deals at SFT is the consortium membership with the Kaw Area Technical School. This membership allows SFT students to attend the Technical School at little cost to them, while earning high school electives. Students can graduate with both a high school diploma and a Kaw Area certificate of completion.

Currently, 19 school districts are members of Kaw Tech which serves northeast Kansas.

Kaw Valley is a learning community with people of all ages striving to attain a common goal. They have an enrollment of approximately 1,250 students in their day and evening classes. High school enrollment represents approximately 400 students. The common link among the students, regardless of age, is a job that pays well with an opportunity for career advancement.

Over the years, Kaw has maintained a placement percentage in the 90 percent range. Each year they do a follow-up study of the students who graduated the previous year. The future looks bright for technical school graduates. Labor market studies predict that technical jobs will account for 80 percent of all jobs in the future. Because Kaw Tech graduates also have to upgrade their skills with continuous training, Kaw has developed an articulation program with Washburn and other junior colleges. Washburn’s articulation agreement also results in a reduction of tution for Kaw Tech graduates.
