BUSINESS & COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

 

      The courses offered in the Santa Fe Trail Business and Technology Department have been approved by the Kansas Department of Education. The courses taken from this department will contribute to an individualÕs academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning, problem-solving skills, work attitudes, and general employability skills. Students will acquire occupational-specific skills necessary for economic independence as a productive and contributing member of society. The following sequence of courses is recommended to choose from in each grade level:

 

  9th Grade: Computer Technology or Computer Applications

10th Grade: Accounting I, Computer Applications, Advanced Computer Applications,  Word Processing, Desktop Publishing, Multimedia

11th Grade: Accounting I, Business Technology, Computer Applications, Advanced Computer Applications, Word Processing, Desktop Publishing, Web Site Design

12th Grade: Accounting I, Business Technology, Word Processing, Desktop Publishing, On the Job Training, Technology Facilitator

 

COMPUTER  TECHNOLOGY

Prerequisites:                       Freshmen

         Computer technology is a two part class where students learn basic keyboarding skills and techniques through a beginning keyboarding program on the computer.  Students will advance to a keyboarding textbook where they will learn and practice document formatting.  During the second part of this course students will learn how to use many of the Microsoft Word features and apply them to documents.  Students will also learn how to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create presentations.  Freshman placement in this course will be determined at the middle school.

 

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Prerequisites:                       Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors

         Computer Applications is a course in which students will learn the basic functions of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access.  Each of these programs will begin with step-by-step exercises from a textbook and will be followed with student projects. Freshmen placed in this course will be determined at the middle schools.

 

ADVANCED COMPUTER  APPLICATIONS

            The students will be completing advanced units in:  Word Processing (first quarter), Spreadsheets (second quarter), Database (third quarter), and Power Point /Graphics (fourth quarter), using Microsoft Office Suite software.  Emphasis will be given to the Ōschool-to-careersÕ workplace competencies & skills (SCANS) that have been identified by the US Department of Labor.

 

WORD PROCESSING (Semester)

Prerequisites:               Computer Applications or Instructor Permission

         Students will be perfecting their keyboarding skills by completing word processing units that cover business letters, memos, reports, outlines, agendas, itineraries, and tables, plus formatting reference manual all using Microsoft Word software.

 

DESKTOP PUBLISHING (Semester)

Prerequisites:               Computer Applications or Instructor Permission

         Students will be introduced to the concept of desktop publishing and will be completing projects using Microsoft Word and Publisher 2003. Projects will include: brochures, signs, advertisements, programs, business cards, flyers, price lists, award certificates, letterhead stationery, and invitations.

 

MULTIMEDIA
Prerequisites:                       Computer Applications

This course provides a basic introduction to digital cameras and basic photography.  Students will learn how to import their images into a software program such as Adobe Photoshop to manipulate and improve them.  Students will also gain a basic understanding of digital camcorders and will learn how to shoot and upload video clips into a software program such as Adobe Premiere to edit and enhance their material.  The primary software programs that we will cover in this course: Adobe PhotoShop, Premiere, and After Effects. Each software package will begin with several step-by-step book exercises and lead to larger projects created by the student. This class requires students to be motivated self-starters and will require additional lab work outside of class to meet due dates. **Completion of this class along with Web Site Design course is required for enrollment in Technology Facilitator.  

WEB SITE DESIGN

Prerequisites:                       Computer Applications

This course provides students with basic skills needed to build and maintain a web site. Students will begin by learning basic HTML code, and will also learn to add JavaScript to their pages. Students will then learn how to use an HTML editor (currently Macromedia Studio MX 2004) to create pages. This class will consist of step-by-step exercises to learn the software packages we will be working with, and progress to pages that the students create for themselves.   This class requires students to be motivated self-starters and will require lab work outside of class to meet due dates. **Completion of this class along with Multimedia is required for enrollment in Technology Facilitator.

 

ACCOUNTING I

Prerequisites:                       Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors                                                                                   

Supplies:                                 #2 pencil; notebook paper; quality eraser, calculator, ruler

         Students in Accounting I will be able to:  prepare financial statements and payroll records; reconcile a bank statement; utilize business documents related to using a checking account; apply generally accepted accounting principals & concepts; and explain the purpose of the accounting system. The course will accommodate the needs of those students who plan to explore accounting in college or pursue accounting as a profession. 

 

COMPUTERIZED ACCOUNTING II

Prerequisites:                       Accounting I

Supplies:                                 #2 pencil; notebook paper; quality eraser; ruler; calculator

         This advanced accounting course is designed for students who: want to acquire an entry level job skill;  want to go to college and major in accounting or some phase of business, or  want to broaden and improve knowledge, understanding, and application of accounting competencies. Accounting principles learned in Accounting I will be reinforced. Students will also learn new concepts such as accounting principles for partnerships and corporations.

 

 

BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY

Prerequisites:                       Juniors or Seniors, who have taken Computer Applications

         Students will acquire basic office skills such as record management, electronic calculators, advanced word processing, transcribing machine and knowledge of modern office procedures and skills. Students will be prepared for employment in entry-level office positions, and will learn time management principles, decision making skills, and develop personal characteristics and good work attitudes along with communication skills.

 

ON THE JOB TRAINING

Prerequisites:                       Seniors- Must have completed approved vocational  business curriculum;

                                                      Instructor, Counselor and Principal approval required

         Students will work in a business in the community for one-block each day during the last year of the business vocational curriculum.  This on-the-job training should give students the experience needed to apply for an entry-level position upon graduation from high school.

 

TECHNOLOGY FACILITATOR

Prerequisites:                       Multimedia, Web Site Design and Instructor Approval

Supplies:                                 Removal storage drive recommended

         Students will build on skills learned in previous computer courses by applying their knowledge to special projects at the high school. Students will be responsible for helping to build, edit, and maintain the schoolÕs web page. Students will be responsible for all aspects of projects assigned to them and will work with the staff to gain hands on experience. Projects will range from working with staff to resolve hardware issues to producing documents for users. Students must complete both: Web Site Design, as well as Multimedia before enrolling in this class.
