Major topics are basic nutrition, use and care of kitchen equipment, safety practices, laboratory procedures, and thinking beyond a cookbook. Healthy Lifestyles focuses on preparing individuals to understand physical, mental, and social wellness. This course stresses the importance of healthful eating and regular physical activity as permanent lifestyle habits. Students will also study the significance of caring for their mental and social health as part of the total wellness picture. The socio-psychological aspects of food and interesting food presentations will be covered. Skills to be developed may include decorating cakes, baking breads, and following gourmet recipes. Decision-making and communication skills will be utilized to explore self-esteem, friendships, family relationships, money management, and consumer choices. The impact family and care givers have on the development and socialization of individuals will be studied. Observation and actual experiences with children are integral parts of the class. CADET (Career Awareness Determines Effective Tomorrow) Can be taken one block or two blocks Prerequisites: Juniors or Seniors; Child Development; Application must be filled out. Supplies: None Other expenses: Transportation to and from the assigned school. This class can be taken for two blocks or just one block. This class gives students practical experience working with children. Real-life family and workplace issues will be studied in the classroom and practiced through student placement in area schools and child care facilities. Career awareness and life planning study will help students transition into their adult lives. The C.A.D.E.T. course encourages students to use their resources in combination with decision-making, critical thinking, problem solving, and management skills. Through opportunities to explore issues related to career and life planning students will develop foundational career skills to enter a global workplace. EXPLORING TEACHING (Semester) Prequisites: Juniors or Seniors; Child Development (Grade of C or above); By application and instructor permission only Supplies: None Have you considered a career in education? In the next 10 years, American will need 2.4 million NEW teachers? Exploring Teaching is just the class for those who have a serious interest in an education career. It is a course designed to recruit quality high school age students for the teaching profession.You will be exposed to a variety of age levels, subject areas, and other occupations in education including: early childhood, middle childhood, special education, secondary, career and technical education, and intervention specialists. You will spend time with administrators and central office staff as well as attend at least one school board meeting. This program focuses on general theory and practice of learning and teaching; the basic principles of educational psychology, the art of teaching; the planning and administration of educational activities, school safety and health issues; and the social foundations of education. A portfolio of your observations and other assignments will be developed during the course and presented to the Advisory Board for evaluation at the end of the year. To work in a classroom on a regular basis, you will also want to enroll in the Practicum (see below). For more detailed information, pick up a packet with the application! PRACTICUM FOR EXPLORING TEACHING (Semester) Prequisites: Juniors or Seniors; Exploring Teaching You will observe and assist a classroom teacher. You will be asked to keep records of your experiences and time spent at the school where you assist. Choice of school/grade level/ or teacher will be made by the occupational coordinator with your preferences being considered. Students will not be placed with a supervisor who is their parent or relative, nor where they have a sibling or other relative attending in the classroom/ At the end of the semester, you will have the option to make a change to another school or classroom or to remain where you are. |
