JOURNALISM


INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM

Prerequisites: Freshmen (with instructor permission),Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors

Supplies: None

This is an introductory course designed to teach fundamental skills that students will be required to know before working on the newspaper, yearbook, or advanced journalism staffs. The course will concentrate heavily on working with the different types of journalistic writing as well as the elements of editing, page design, and graphic design. Digital photography basics and journalistic law will also be included.


ADVANCED JOURNALISM

Prerequisites: Intro. to Journ. or instructor permission for juniors and seniors; completed application

Supplies: None

This class produces various publications for the school and district, including but not limited to athletic programs, music program, brochures for classes, etc. Desktop publishing skills will be utilized as students will work with both Adobe In Design and Adobe Photoshop. Students will be expected to take a variety of pictures and to work with various individuals while producing publications. This class is for students who have good work habits to meet deadlines, creative talents, imaginative ideas, and time to devote to creating a good product.


NEWSPAPER

Prerequisites: Intro. to Journ. or instructor permission for juniors and seniors; completed application

Supplies: None

The newspaper class produces The Red & Blue Review, which is the high school newspaper. Staff members will conduct interviews, write various journalistic stories and headlines, take pictures, edit copy, and design pages while producing the publication. Desktop publishing skills will be utilized as students will work with both Adobe In Design and Adobe Photoshop. This class is for students who have good work habits to meet deadlines, creative talents, imaginative ideas, and time to devote to creating a good product.


YEARBOOK

Prerequisites: Intro. to Journ. or instructor permission for juniors and seniors; completed application

Supplies: None

Other expenses: Gas money when selling ads

This class producesThe Charger, which is the high school yearbook. Staff members will conduct interviews, write yearbook copy and headlines, take pictures, edit copy, and design pages while producing the book. Desktop publishing skills will be utilized as students will work with both Adobe In Design, Adobe Photoshop, and Josten's Yeartech program. In addition, students are given the summer to sell advertisements to help fund the publishing of the book. This class is for students who have good work habits to meet deadline, creative talents, imaginative ideas, and time to devote to creating a good product.
