Message from the Superintendent 4/9/21

Dear Parents, Patrons and Staff;

COVID 19 made a re-appearance in our schools this week. One student tested positive from an outside contact, five students are quarantined, and two negative tests were completed.  With just six weeks of school remaining this year, let’s do everything possible to stay healthy and safe.

The Pfizer Vaccine is now approved for anyone 16 years of age and older. Parents if you have a high school student 16 to 18 years old please consider having them vaccinated. The vaccine is available through both Topeka hospitals.

State assessments are underway for students in our district. Please encourage your students to do their best. It is critical that we know how well our students are doing academically. Students were in remote learning all of last spring and no state assessments were given. The state assessments being given now along with our local assessment in May will help us identify students who are behind in their learning and pinpoint areas where they need additional help. Teachers have worked hard this year trying to help students catch up but we know there are still gaps. Having students at grade level as they move through the Pre K through 12 system is critical to their future success.

Summer learning opportunities will be provided for students K-5 in reading and 6-8 in math on an as needed basis. Parents will be contacted by their student’s school and given the opportunity to enroll.

The April Board of Education meeting will be held at Santa Fe Trail High School on Wednesday April 14th at 6:00 PM. The agenda includes the appointment of a new board member to fill an unexpired term, a presentation from the OAC Redesign team and an administrative recommendation for Summit Learning for the 21-22 school year along with several other items.

Some important events coming up to add to your calendar include:

  •
  • May 7 – Kindergarten Roundup at OAC
  • May 3-7 – Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4 is National Teacher Appreciation Day)
  • May 14 – Jr. High Graduation – 7:00 PM SFTHS
  • May 15 – High School Graduation – 10:00 AM SFTHS
