Message from the Superintendent 4/16/21
Dear Parents, Patrons, and Staff;
With 5 weeks of school remaining the number of students and staff quarantined because of COVID remains very low, only 3 in quarantine. Thanks to everyone for taking precautions and staying safe.
At their meeting last Wednesday the Board of Education took several steps toward preparing for the 21-22 school year. The Board approved:
- Recommendation for employment of teaching staff including returning staff and several new staff members. Our goal is to have a highly qualified teacher in every classroom across the district.
- Recommendations for three new teaching positions including a STREAM position at OAC. STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math) will provide opportunities for elementary students to take part in additional project and problem based learning experiences. New Reading and Math Intervention courses at CAC are designed to look closely at student learning data and provide additional support to insure that students are achieving at grade level.
- Recommendations to provide an OPT-IN opportunity to the Summit Core Curriculum classes for students in grades 6-12. The Summit core curriculum is aligned to Kansas State Learning Standard and highly recommended by the Kansas State Department of Education. Please keep in mind that Summit is another opportunity for students just like College Prep or a Career Pathway. It is our goal to have all district core curriculum aligned to the State Standard and sequenced from grade level to grade level and course to course but that is still a work in progress. Our teachers, principals and district curriculum director are working hard to insure that all students in any course or grade level receive high quality instruction and learning opportunities that meet their academic and social-emotional needs and prepare them for the next course or grade level and beyond.
- The Board also heard a report from teachers at OAC regarding the School Redesign Blueprint. That Blueprint includes Student Success Skills, Personalized Learning, Real World Applications and Family/Business/Community Engagement. The school Redesign team will present their plan to the Kansas State Board of Education this summer.
Overbrook Attendance Center is planning for “Ready Set Read Night” scheduled for next Thursday night April 22nd. The team is developing plans for an antique car show and having a BBQ Food Truck in conjunction with the Read Night. Sounds like fun for all.
Congratulations to Travisray Salyers, he was recently named Kansas PBL FBLA Alumni or the Year. We are blessed to have Travisray working with our students at SFTHS.
Congratulations to Kylie Hastings. Kylie was selected by the Board of Education to fill the open position on the Board and to serve out the remainder of that term. She has also filed to run for the position in the election to be held later this year. Kylie is a lifelong resident of our district, we look forward to working with her as the newest member of the USD 434 Board of Education.
The SFTHS Prom is this Saturday night. Best wishes to all of our students, parents, and staff for a great evening.
Quote for the Week!
