- SFT Science Department
Hello USD 434 students and families!
Are you curious about the world around you? Do you enjoy reading and exploring ideas in science? Family Science and Literacy Fun is starting today!
This year the high school science department and the district Link Grant are partnering to engage students in reading and science exploration at home during the WHOLE month of April!! The Link Grant, which promotes literacy, provided a large number of science story books that have been given to teachers to use in their classrooms and some to be given to students to keep as a prize!
How can you participate in the Family Science and Literacy Fun?
- Students K-5 will receive an Activity Page from their teacher to take home. If students complete 5 different activities, they will receive a prize from the High School Science Department! The activities include small science experiments using household items, nature walks, reading stories about famous scientists, creating a weather forecast and much more! Activity pages should be turned in to your child’s teacher by April 28th. (All participants will receive a small prize and have their name entered into a drawing to win one of the larger prizes in the picture above!)
- Each week, check out the district social media pages and your email for a fun science video made by high school students who would like to share what they enjoy about science!
- Fill out the quick Link grant survey about literacy! https://surveys.greenbush.org/

DRIVING PORTION
Students will be assigned a driving instructor. That instructor will inform you of your driving times. It is your responsibility to inform the instructor of times you are not available to drive. Missed drive times could delay or keep you from passing the course. Most of the driving will take place after school is out and the month of June. In order to pass the driving portion of the class a student must:
- Students will be required to pass driving based competences:
- driving fundamentals
- turns
- parking
- urban driving
- highway driving
- rural driving
- Be on time to driving dates.
- Have mature behavior in the car.
If you have passed both the classroom and the driving areas of the driver’s education class you will then receive a certificate of completion form.
Questions: Regan Erickson, Santa Fe Trail High School, 800-836-9525; rerickson@usd434.us .
CUTOFF DATE
We have to limit students this year because of a lack of driving instructors. All students are required to be 14 at the time of the classroom portion. The cutoff date to take Driver’s Ed at SFT is May 1st. If your student’s birthday is within a few days of the cutoff, let me know, and I can tell you if it is possible to squeeze them in.
If your student misses the cutoff date or we are full, here are their options: (Remember, ALL students are required to have a learners permit one full year prior to getting a restricted)(Also, check the license options available)
1. There are driving schools in Topeka, and they are able to be more flexible with the start dates etc. of the class.
2. Have your student take the handbook test at the DMV and get their Learner’s Permit. All students have to have a learner’s permit one full year before getting their restricted license. For example, say a student got their Learner’s Permit on May 20th of 2021 because they turned 14 on May 10th. They could take Driver’s Ed at SFT in 2022, and once they pass, go in and get their restricted, as long as they have enough practice hours (minimum of 25 hours, with 5 of those at night; or the full 50 hours, with 10 at night that they will need before they get their lesser restricted license at 16.)
3. Wait until April 2022 to take Driver’s Ed at SFT, not getting their LP until class. The issue with this is they will still have to wait a full year from the date of being issued a LP.
HANDBOOK TEST
All Driver’s Ed students must take and pass the Kansas Handbook test with me. The test score and date must be entered into the KDOR portal before they can be entered into the system, even if the student already possesses a LP. See the handbook test dates below. CAUTION!! IF the test is taken and failed 4 times, the student may not take the test again, or driver’s education for 6 months. The handbook must be read and studied. A practice test can be found at https://www.dmv-written-test.com/Kansas/practice-test-1.html.
Options: I will have two test dates available for your student to take the Kansas Handbook exam. I have handbooks I can loan out to study. There is also an online version that can be found at: https://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/dlhb.pdf .
- April 28th -Enrollment meeting, 7pm, SFT Auditorium (parent and student)
--May 1st -must be 14 May 1st (get ahold of me if within a few days). Online class starts.
-Hand book test dates: SFT LMC, 11am-12pm(10:30a I will give a short lesson, MAY 1st, or at SFT May 5th, LMC, 6-7pm. It is also possible for me to have a SFT student take the test during SD time during the school day.
-June 1st and 2nd-Final Exam, SFT LMC, 6:00-7:30pm.
-May 10-July 15th-potential driving portion driver’s ed.
Driver’s Education 2021
Limited participants-because of the lack of driving instructors, we are limiting driver’s ed to 40 students. Below are the guidelines used for filling the class roster:
- Students that were enrolled at SFTHS during the 20-21 school year.
- Any USD 434 student that currently has a Kansas Driving Learner’s Permit
- Age (must be 14 by May 1st), AND passes the Kansas Driving Handbook Test, offered by Mr. Erickson on May 1st, at 11:00 am, at the SFTHS library.
If your student does not make the class roster, here are their options: (Remember, ALL students are required to have driver’s ed AND a learners permit one full year prior to getting a restricted)(Also, check the license options available)
1. There are driving schools in Topeka, and they are able to be more flexible with the start dates etc. of the class.
2. Have your student take the handbook test at the DMV and get their Learner’s Permit ASAP. All students have to have a learner’s permit one full year before getting their restricted license. For example, say a student got their Learner’s Permit on March 1st of 2021 because they turned 14 on March 1st. They could take Driver’s Ed at SFT in Summer of 2022, and once they pass, go in and get their restricted, as long as they have enough practice hours (minimum of 25 hours, with 5 of those at night; or the full 50 hours, with 10 at night that they will need before they get their lesser restricted license at 16.)
3. Wait until Summer 2022 to take Driver’s Ed at SFT, not getting their LP until class. The issue with this is they will still have to wait a full year from the date of being issued a LP to get their Restricted.
Timeline
April 28th - enrollment meeting, parent and student. Please pay $150 at enrollment, or $50 minimum due, with the remainder due by May 14th. (no money due if your student is on the bubble for making the student cut off).
Handbook Test - May 1st, 11:00a-12:00p in SFT Library; May 5th, 6:00p-7:00p in SFT LIbrary. It is possible for high school students to take the Hand Book test with me during their SD time.
If the student meets all requirements, they will begin taking the 18 chapter exams on May 3rd, which must be passed with an 80% or better.
ALL ONLINE classwork must be complete by June 2nd. IN PERSON final at SFTHS must be passed on June 1st, or June 2nd.
IF students pass the classwork, they will be assigned a driving instructor, who will schedule them for 6 drives, between May 10th-July 15th.
***Students must know before entering enrollment meeting:
Full name as it appears on their birth certificate
Student phone #.
Parent phone #.
Parent email address.
Full address.
Date of Birth.
Height.
Weight.
Answer the following questions (be prepared to describe)
Are you a resident of Kansas?
Do you have any physical limitations that may require car modifications?
Do you currently have any physical, medical, vision or mental conditions that could make it difficult to operate a motor vehicle safely?
Have you suffered a seizure in the last six months?
Are you currently enrolled in drug rehabilitation or a habitual user of drugs or alcohol?
Do you have a current Kansas driver’s license? Number if yes:
Is your license now or has it ever been suspended/restricted/revoked in Kansas or any other state?
(If questions, please email rerickson@usd434.us. This process can be confusing. Remember that a student must possess a LP for an entire year prior to getting a Restricted. So if you get your LP now, whether you take Driver Ed this year or next, you will still have to wait one year for the Restricted. So getting the LP now is key. Drive Safe, hope to see you soon.)
