Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Carbondale Attendance Center! My name is Ben O'Dell, and I am excited to be the new principal here at CAC. This year at USD 434 begins my 22nd year in education, during which I have been a middle and high school teacher in social studies, science, and special education as well as a coach. Most recently I spent the last two years as a middle school assistant principal and athletic director in Hutchinson, Kansas. I have a master's and bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas. My wife is also a 20+ year educator, and together we have three children who are now adults. The last twelve months have been a time of challenges for everyone. As we look forward to the coming school year and its own uncertainties, please let me reassure you that our purpose here at CAC remains constant: to support our community and provide an exceptional education for all of our students. We will challenge our students daily to keep growing, changing, and learning. Our talented staff at CAC has been busy getting ready for the coming school year. Our learning plans begin with foundational skills and content knowledge, integrating technology to power our instruction. At the same time we also want to help students think more critically about HOW they are learning instead of only focusing on WHAT they are learning. Grades Four and Five are rolling out Comprehensive Literacy this year to drive instruction. Grades Six through Eight are starting Summit Learning in core classes, as part of a larger plan that will continue through high school. Building-wide at CAC this year we are committed to helping students set goals and track their completion, and we will teach and practice goal-setting skills all year long. This is where support from home comes into play. At CAC we understand the critical role that a strong partnership between home and school can play in the growth of our students. You can expect frequent contact with our staff via email, phone, or in person as the school year progresses. We invite you to reach out to our staff to celebrate student success, to ask questions, or to voice any concerns you have. We also encourage you to talk to your children about what they learned each day. By home and school working closely together we can best support our students in the learning journey. To those that are new to our school community, let me welcome you to the CAC family. To our returning families, we are glad to have you back. To everyone in the school community, thanks for trusting us with your amazing children. Remember that our doors are always open to you, and ideas are always welcome. I am looking forward to an amazing school year full of challenge and opportunity. Respectfully, Ben O’Dell Principal Carbondale Attendance Center
