Known as the “Water Sports Capital of Kansas,” Osage County is one of only two counties in the United States to have two federal lakes located within its boundaries. Located on the scenic eastern edge of the Flint Hills, the area is characterized by gently rolling hills covered with tall native grasses and woodlands. Not only do water sports and outdoor recreation abound, but so does Osage County’s rich history. The Santa Fe Trail passed through Osage County and its wagon ruts remain visible today. As its name would suggest, Santa Fe Trail High School sits directly on the Santa Fe Trail. The first line on the Santa Fe Railway was in Osage County, prompted by the county’s vast coal mining heritage. Wagon ruts, one-room schoolhouses, and railroad museums, or water skiing, golf courses, and antique shops - you can find it all in Osage County, Kansas.
